Love and Rockets: The Covers HC (Fantagraphics)

L+R Covers

Rating: 5/5 – Perfect for art loving Love and Rockets fans.

I ordered this back in January 2013 and it’s finally out!  Believe me, it was worth the wait.  If you’re a fan of Love and Rockets or just a fan or art, check this book out.

Let’s start with the cover.  If you noticed the animated image above as the page loaded, it’s simulating the acetate overlay that slides onto the under-image printed on the cover of the book.    This is also the cover of the first collected edition Music for Mechanics, which is reproduced inside along with the Original Art for that cover.  MUCH more impressive in person, but an indication of a package that goes above and beyond to present some really spectacular art.  What we get here are the covers (front and back!) of the 1st 50 issues of the 1st run of Love and Rockets, the covers of the collected editions released during the original series’ run, and and added treat, the Original art for the self published Love and Rockets #1.

We get a number of other scans of original art (placed adjacent to the color cover) as well as a bunch of production ephemera and scans that help show some of the steps involved in producing the final covers.  Topping this all off is a section at the back with notes from Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez on many of the covers reproduced in this volume.

The reproduction is crisp and the over-sized format (10.25×13.25) and high quality paper really showcases the art.  There’s not a lot more to say.  If you’re a fan, buy this!
