Red Light Properties Vol. 1 (IDW)

Rating: 4/5 – Want some previously haunted property in Florida for a good price?
by ComicSpectrum EiC Bob Bretall

Red Light Properties follows Jude Tobin, clairvoyant from birth and college educated in Phenomenology, as he cleanses haunted houses of unwanted and lingering spiritual presences so they can be sold on the Real Estate market (often by his ex-wife, a licensed broker).

We’re not talking about huge Gothic mansions set off at the end of a long dark road, RLP is more likely to be dealing with a suburban tract house that was the scene of a murder or suicide at some point in the past, but a ghost is a ghost, and Jude can see them and get them gone.  So, RLP provides a valuable service to the community in issuing their “Green Light Certified” thumbs up that a previously problematic property is now “spirit free”.

I originally came upon Red Light Properties years ago as a webcomic.  I subscribed and would get an e-mail from creator Dan Goldmen whenever a new page was ready and faithfully followed it for years.  Now we have a print collection of this very fun series on the stands from IDW and it will also soon be available as a series of single digital issues from Monkeybrain/Comixology.

Goldman combines photography (usually for scenery/backgrounds) & 3D modeling along with his digital line art and painting to create a story with a really unique style.  Add in his sense of humor, ear for dialogue, and twisted story arc plots and you get a series that’s like no other.  Add to that the fact that Goldman grounds the weirdness in the real world with the addition of the occasional mundane real estate details and the domestic drama involved in Jude’s day-to-day relationship with his ex-wife who he has to see on a regular basic because they co-own RLP.  Combine all these elements, shake well, and you get Red Light Properties.  If you’re a fan of black comedy, weird/trippy supernatural escapades, and just great storytelling, give Red Light Properties a try.
